How do I buy more Maps?
You can buy more maps through the in-app store on your iPhone. Simply go to the app settings, and then select the Store. In there you’ll see both 1:50k map regions and 1:25k map regions. 1:50k map regions are split into huge areas of GB such as South East, South West or Wales (www.outdoorsgps.com/regions.php). The 1:25k maps are offered as English or Welsh Counties or Scottish Divisions (www.outdoorsgps.com/25kmaps.php ). Alternatively you can choose a National Park (www.outdoorsgps.com/regions.php ). Simply choose your region and press Buy, then the maps will be permanently downloaded to your device. You can delete and re-download them at any time.
How do I integrate my previously purchased standalone OS map apps into the OutDoors app?
Unfortunately you cannot combine the two: the OutDoors apps and the standalone OS map-apps are separate apps and are it is not possible to share maps between them. OutDoors will not be able to recognise the standalone OS map apps; it can only recognise the maps purchased from its in-app Store.
If you purchased these standalone maps recently then you may be able to get Apple to refund them.
On your iTunes receipt under each purchase is a clickable link that says 'Report a problem'.
Please press this link and select the appropriate reason e.g. 'this was purchased in error' option and your refund request will be process by Apple. Then you can go on to purchase the map from the in-app store so it will integrate with your map.
Your receipt can also be found in your iTunes Purchase history here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2727
Apple will always reply and usually respond within 48 hours.
I cannot see any detailed maps when I zoom in:
The OutDoors app has a base map of Great Britain on which to apply Ordnance Survey maps of your choice, which you purchase through the in-app Store. These country, regional, or specific area maps then lay over the country-wide ‘main map’ all together, so that you only need zoom in on your chosen map areas, and watch as the layers of bought map detail (1:50k or 1:25k) reveal themselves.
These can be easily purchased from the in-app store on your device as described below:
From the Main Map Screen:
Tap Compass,
Then Settings (spanner icon),
Then the green Store button,
At the top of the store list are any free bundled maps available to download (including your free National Parks bundled maps, which are outlined in this map - http://www.nationalparks.gov.uk/ - if you purchased the OutDoors GB with National Parks app).
You can also check which maps are installed by tapping the ‘installed’ tab at the bottom of the Store screen.
Any maps previously purchased from within the same application can be added individually by pressing the 'price' button next to each map, or the 'restore purchases' button. You will not be charged for re-downloading maps previously purchased from within the same app when using the same iTunes account.
Once you have downloaded your required detailed maps from the map store, simply return to the Main Map screen, and zoom into your downloaded area and the detailed maps will appear automatically.
The most effective method of zooming in for this application is too double-tap the screen, as opposed to the pinch-and-grab technique, which sometimes just enlarges the current view detail instead of allowing the map to reveal its layers of detail (1:50k after about four double-taps, 1:25k after another two). You don’t need to 'open' the maps as such.
My map screen is stuck and I cannot move the map:
This will happen if you press the 'centre' crosshair button (second on the right at the bottom on the Main Map screen) which zooms in on your location, and locks the screen onto it so that the map will automaticaly follow your position.
You will know when it is on as it becomes highlighted whiter when you press it.
To turn the lock off simply press the center button again to move freely about the map.
Will I be charged again if I re-download a map?
No. If this happens then please let Apple know by pressing the 'Report a Problem' button on your iTunes receipt. You should never be charged again for the exact same download even if you get a new iPhone or use more than one device such as an iPad or iTouch.
How do I disable the ‘Compass Interference’ Message?
Unfortunatley this is not part of our app but part of the iPhone interface that comes up if an app has the compass capability.
We are looking into ways to add an option to disable this from appearing for the next update.
While it does not solve the problem, this is also a helpful video for a full calibration; the instruction is about 1min 30seconds into the video link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86yUpUt8U6s&feature=related
You might also like to know that the compass is usually satisfied by a slow tilt to the left or right (about 90 degrees) rather than having to do a full figure-of-eight movement!
Why does it not find my location?
The latest iOS 4 resets many location options to off. Please make sure that outdoors is enabled and ON in your iPhone settings > general > location services > on/off
What is the difference between OutDoors GB and OutDoors GB with National Parks?
Only that the latter has some maps provided as part of the initial purchase; all GB National Parks at 1:50k. Otherwise the 2 apps are exactly the same.
How can I import my own tracks or routes?
On the online Route builder http://www.outdoorsgps.com/route_dyn/ , by first creating an account. You can also import routes in gpx format to the site.
You can then upload, view, edit, save (on your device or to the web - publicly or privately) and email these routes from your device.
Here is a short guide on how to do this:
On your device, click on the 'Routes' button (bottom right of screen on main map)
Then click on the 'View Account' tab at the top of the page
Click log in (if not already logged in) and enter your info
Then go back to 'Routes' via the top left 'Routes tab'
Then click the 'On Website' tab at the bottom middle of the screen
You should now be able to see all of the routes have you saved on the website.
How do I delete a route in my route list?
Using a standard gesture for deleting from a list on the iPhone; just slide your finger across the track name in the list, in a right-to-left gesture ("swipe it across the route name"). This gesture brings up a red Delete button.
How do I edit a Route, WayPoint or TrackPoint?
First when you have a route up, click on the Pencil-Foot icon. Then click anywhere on a route or point. If you click on a straight bit of route, then a new point is created. You can edit any point by clicking on it and then either deleting (press on minus) or adding a name or description (press on right arrow): doing this turns the point into a WayPoint which can be seen whenever you view the route. Any Point or Waypoint can be edited or deleted or simply moved.
How do I build a Route?
Click on the ‘+’ button when viewing the route list. This starts the process and you then choose how to select the start point (current view, gazetteer or current map view). Now you can place track points using the Drop Pin+ button. You can also tap and drag these route points..
How do I buy premium, trusted Routes?
Click on the ‘+’ button when viewing the route list and then select ‘Buy from Store’. Alternatively just go to the store through Settings. Then select 'Walks' tab (middle top) and then find the area in which you would like to purchase a bunch of walks. We have packaged 20-50 routes from each content provider for each region so you get a lot of great routes with your purchase. Downloading takes about 30 seconds on a wifi.
How do I re-download my application?
iTunes will remember apps you have purchased, if you go back to the page of the app and click buy. In-app purchases are also remembered so just re-download your app making sure it is the same app as you originaly purchased and you are using the same iTunes account.
Does OutDoors work with the iPad WiFi, iPod Touch or 1st Generation iPhones?
OutDoors will work with these devices but without the GPS functionality as these devices do not have a GPS chipset. The iPad 3G devices do have a GPS so OutDoors works fully with those devices.
My iPhone is having trouble downloading the app.
The application is quite large and if you are having trouble downloading it directly to the device then Apple recommends downloading the app to iTunes and then syncing your phone. It is also worth rebooting sometimes as this frees up memory. When downloading maps through in-app purchase, you need to be on a Wifi network or it could take some time and use up your data allowance.
Where can I see Map Keys?
Great Britain OS Key
France IGN Key
Germany BKG Key
As the iPhone 3G does not have a built in magnetic compass will the compass feature work on it?
With no magnetic compass, your heading can only be determined by your GPS reading if you are travelling in a steady direction for approximately 20 metres.
My battery drains faster when using the GPS.
Using the GPS can put an extra strain on the devices battery and there are some measures you can take to get a longer life from your battery: www.apple.com/uk/batteries/iphone.html and see our TOP TIPS as well (start with turning off Wifi, 3G and reducing the screen brightness). If you just want to browse the maps without GPS you can turn the GPS off in the iPhone settings > general > location services > on/off.
My app is not starting up and/or is running slowly.
First try fully shutting down the app. This closes it, but does not delete it from your device, and it is best to close down all other apps that are open unnecessarily to free up memory space and allow the app to function freely:
Go to the Home screen
Double-tap the Home button until the dock/taskbar appears, which tells you which applications you currently have open
Hold your finger down on any of these for app. 1 second until they begin to wiggle
You can then press the little red sign in the corner of each app icon which will shut it down properly
N.B. If you are in an app, the icon for that app will not appear
You can then reopen the app as normal
Alternatively, if the problem persists, you can try a Hard Reset of your device:
Hold both the sleep/wake button on top of your device and the Home button together until the ‘Slide to Power Off’ message comes up
Ignore this and continue holding them both until the screen goes black
You can then restart it as normal, let the system re-boot, and then re-open the app as normal.
This is because your iPhone is short of memory. This can be freed up by a full reboot.
